Named in the honor of John Ball, who was the first settler to arrive in 1804, Ballwin was laid out after overland mail route Jefferson City and St. Louis passed by his property. In the following years, Ballwin grew steadily and became a coveted suburb of the city of St. Louis after the World War II.

What used to be town with only a few businesses and homes became a village of more than 750 residents at the time of its incorporation in 1950.
